CHALLENGES: The northeast distribution center for Borders Books was seeking to move into 600,000 of new warehouse space in Carlisle Pennsylvania. While the highly-automated multi-level storage, sorting and retrieval system is the centerpiece of this facility, the "incidental" office areas exceeded 21,000 square feet. Numerous mezzanines and conveyor belts added to the nightmare of identifying paths of egress within code requirements, and then demonstrating graphically to the local code officials that the design was compliant. SOLUTIONS: Working with the warehouse system integrator, paths of egress and related emergency lighting were identified. This often required that some conveyors be raised or rerouted in order to provide the proper clearances below them. The drawings became a series of overlays that were cut 6'-8" above the egress paths, with travel distance calculations to prove code conformance. |
